Chinese investigators arrive in Pakistan to probe suicide attack that killed 5 of its nationals

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A team of Chinese investigators arrived in Pakistan on Friday to join a probe into a suicide attack that killed five of its nationals earlier this week, officials said, as Pakistan continued its own investigations into the attack.

The slain Chinese engineers and workers were heading on Tuesday to the Dasu Dam, the biggest hydropower project in northwest Pakistan, when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into their vehicle.

A Pakistani driver was also killed in Tuesday’s attack in Shangla, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Beijing condemned the attack and asked Pakistan to conduct a detailed investigation and ensure protection of thousands of its nationals who work on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

According to a government statement, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday briefed the Chinese investigators about Pakistan’s investigations into the attack.

Two days earlier, Pakistani officials shared with the Chinese embassy the preliminary findings of their investigation into the attack, for which so far no group has claimed responsibility.

Chinese working on CPEC-related projects have been targeted in Pakistan in recent years.

In July 2021, at least 13 people, including nine Chinese nationals, were killed when a suicide bomber detonated the explosives in his vehicle near a bus carrying Chinese and Pakistani engineers and laborers, prompting Chinese companies to suspend work for a time.

Charlotte international flight becomes 1st ever to arrive at Tulum airport

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A Thursday flight out of Charlotte International Airport made history becoming the first international flight to christen a relatively new airport in Tulum, Mexico.

The American Airlines flight left Charlotte for Tulum International Airport, the same day the airport began offering international service. Dallas and Miami are the other two locations offering similar services to the Tulum airport, which made its debut in December.

“As Charlotte’s Hometown Airline, we are proud to provide our customers direct service to Tulum so they can access its ancient ruins, picturesque landscapes, and white sand beaches like never before,” AA’s Senior VP of Charlotte Hub Operations Ralph Lopez Massas said. “Expanding our network across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America is part of our commitment to create the most comprehensive network in the industry and add service to the places our customers want to travel to.”

The service arrives just in time for spring break and will operate year-round daily with flights capable of filling 172 seats.

“We are excited for American Airlines to offer a nonstop route to beautiful and historical Tulum, Mexico,” Charlotte Airport Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry said. “The new route underscores the significance of the American Airlines hub operation at CLT.”

3 astronauts aboard Russia’s Soyuz MS-25 spacecraft arrive at International Space Station

March 25 (UPI) — Three astronauts on board Russia’s Soyuz MS-25 made it safely to the International Space Station nearly 250 miles above earth after a nearly two-day orbital journey.

The spacecraft — which carried NASA astronaut Tracy Dyson, Marina Vasilevskaya of Belarus and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy — docked at 11:03 a.m. EDT after a 50 hour trip from Kazakhstan, a former Soviet satellite state south of Russia that borders China.

Joining them at the space station are seven other crew members of Expedition 70 who already are in orbit.

Dyson is expected to spend the next six months as a flight engineer before her return in September accompanied by cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub of Roscosmos, who will have ended their year-long space missions, according to NASA.

But Novitskiy, whose fourth flight to space this was, and Vasilevskaya who is now on her first, will be in space for just 12 days.

Video shows moment bumbling Ohio burglar falls from bank roof into trash can — just as police arrive

A not-so-stealthy Ohio burglary suspect appeared to be stunned as he dropped from a bank’s roof into a trash can — only to then find officers awaiting his arrival, according to police body camera footage.

The suspect was released from jail Friday following his early Wednesday arrest on multiple allegations, including breaking and entering, Huron Police Chief Terry Graham said Friday.

The confrontation at VacationLand Federal Credit Union in Huron, a city about 50 miles west of Cleveland, was captured on video via the body camera of at least one officer.

Officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday based on an alarm notification, Graham said in a statement.

The body camera footage shows two officers focusing on sounds that seemed to come from an access door above the credit union’s drive-thru.

Soon enough, the door opened and a bag of what Graham said were tools dropped from the hatch. Not far behind was the suspect, a man in black and navy blue wearing gloves, sunglasses and face covering, the video showed.

The suspect dropped to a blue waste bin below the hatch, and his weight appeared to push him through the lid, according to the clip.

The bin fell forward, and the suspect relaxed his body in a display of surrender, the video showed. “Aw, f—,” the suspect proclaimed as he realized his predicament.

He did not get any cash or valuables, Graham said.

He was identified as Tristan J. Heidl, 27, of Huron. Officers booked him on suspicion of breaking and entering, possession of criminal tools, and safecracking, Graham said.

The suspect posted $50,000 bond and was released Friday following a court appearance, the chief said by email. It wasn’t clear if he entered a plea or has obtained legal representation; the Erie County Public Defender’s Office did not immediately respond to an inquiry.

“When asked why he did this, he responded that he was broke,” Graham said Friday.

VacationLand did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The institution was founded in 1956 by General Motors manufacturing employees in nearby Sandusky.

The region was once known as Ohio’s Vacationland for its popularity with summer tourists seeking to be near the Lake Erie shoreline.

According to the schedule, the liner will leave Sochi on 29 July. Its passengers may remain on the ship until its departure from Batumi and not cross the Georgian border.

On 27 July, the Astoria Grande liner, carrying Russian tourists on board, arrived in Batumi, Georgia. After that, local residents started a protest. They chanted “Russian ship, go fu** yourself” and “Abkhazia is Georgia,” and also brought photographs depicting Abkhazia and the events of the Russo-Georgian August war.

Earlier:

  • The liner sailed from Batumi on the same evening, two days before schedule.

  • Georgian President Salomé Zourabichvili noted that she was proud of the people who protested in Batumi, and she called the arrival of the liner from Sochi a Russian provocation.
