A man who escaped from a Hawaii jail and was struck by a vehicle soon after died Thursday from his injuries, authorities said. Matthew J. Ornellas Jr. was seriously hurt in a hit-and-run after he fled from Kauai Community Correctional Center just after 1 a.m. last Friday, the Hawaii Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

He scaled a fence with razor wire, and correctional officers gave chase but lost sight of him when he entered a dense brush area, officials said.

Soon afterward they heard a loud sound from the road and found him lying next to Kuhio Highway, about 100 yards away from the jail. An ambulance transported him to a hospital, where he remained in serious condition and in custody. His condition deteriorated and he was pronounced dead Thursday.

Ornellas, 33, was a minimum-security inmate serving time for a drug conviction, officials said.

The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said it is continuing to investigate the escape.

Orenellas was hit as he was running north in the southbound lane of Kuhio Highway, Kauai police said. Police are searching for the driver, who left the scene before first responders arrived.

Kauai police said they “strongly encourages anyone who may have information about this incident to do the right thing and come forward.”

The incident marked the fourth traffic fatality on Kauai so far this year, police said.

A public defender who represented Ornellas for a probation violation declined previously to comment on the escape.

In September, CBS News dug into data from 26 states, which showed over 1,100 documented instances of escapes from law enforcement custody over the past five years.

Car of South Africa’s ex-president hit by drunk driver

South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma has been involved in a car crash but was unhurt.

A drunk driver collided with his “official armoured state vehicle” on Thursday evening, police have said.

But a leading member of his uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party alleged that he had been targeted.

He has been suspended by the governing African National Congress (ANC) and is campaigning for the MK ahead of May’s general election.

Mr Zuma was in the car, along with his official protection team, when it was hit on a road in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal at about 18:40 local time (16:40 GMT) on Thursday.

“No-one was injured, including members of the Presidential Protection Services. The former president was evacuated and taken to his residence,” a brief police statement said.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested for “drunken driving as well as… reckless and negligent driving”.

The MK’s party’s head of elections, Musa Mkhize, has told public broadcaster SABC that he thought the crash was deliberate rather than an accident.

“Unfortunately, we have been waiting for it to happen. The president was warned that before the day of the elections, he would be lying in the hospital. Thanks to the Presidential Protection Unit members who managed to keep the president safe,” he is quoted by News24 as saying.

Mr Zuma, 81, served as president from 2009 until 2018, when he had to step down because of corruption allegations, which he denies. As a former president, he is entitled to have an official protection team.

The crash happened on the same day that the country’s electoral commission said that Mr Zuma was barred from running as a candidate in the 29 May general election. It is believed that his 15-month jail sentence given in 2021 for contempt of court constitutionally excludes him.

Some opinion polls have suggested that the ANC’s share of the vote could fall below 50% for the first time in 30 years.

The MK, which was only recently formed, could dent some of its support, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal where Mr Zuma is very influential.

Pakistani police say 5 Chinese nationals and their local driver were killed in a suicide attack

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A suicide bomber in northwest Pakistan rammed his explosive-laden car into a vehicle Tuesday, killing five Chinese nationals and their Pakistani driver, police and government officials said.

The attack happened in Shangla, a district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local police chief Bakhat Zahir said. He added that the five killed were construction workers and engineers heading to the Dasu Dam, the biggest hydropower project in Pakistan, where they worked.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province borders Afghanistan. The Pakistani Taliban have stepped up attacks there in recent years.

Authorities said the bodies were transported to a nearby hospital, and that security forces started a massive search in the area to look for accomplices. Police also launched an investigation into the attack.

Tuesday’s attack came less than a week after Pakistani security forces killed eight Baluchistan Liberation Army militants who opened fire on a convoy carrying Chinese citizens outside the Chinese-funded Gwadar port in the volatile southwestern Baluchistan province.

The BLA wants independence from the central government in Islamabad.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack in a statement on Tuesday and offered condolences to the families of the deceased. He wrote: “The enemy has targeted Chinese citizens who are the friends of Pakistan,” without elaborating who he was referring to. He also vowed to ”deal with an iron hand” those responsible, and expressed hope the attack wouldn’t negatively impact Pakistani-Chinese relations.

Naqvi also visited China’s embassy in the capital, Islamabad, where he briefed the Chinese ambassador, Jiang Zaidong, about the attack, promising a full investigation, according to the ministry of interior.

Thousands of Chinese nationals work in Shangla on projects relating to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor which includes a multitude of mega projects such as road construction, power plants and agriculture.

The CPEC, also known as the One Road Project, is a lifeline for Pakistan’s cash-strapped government, currently facing one of the worst economic crises. It is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a global endeavor aimed at reconstituting the Silk Road and linking China to all corners of Asia.

Chinese laborers working on CPEC-related projects in Pakistan have come under attack in recent years.

In July 2021, at least 13 people, including nine Chinese nationals, were killed when a suicide bomber detonated his vehicle near a bus carrying several Chinese and Pakistani engineers and laborers, prompting the Chinese companies to suspend work at the time.

Since then, Pakistan has beefed up security on CPEC-related projects.

NASCAR suspends driver Noah Gragson for liking insensitive meme depicting face of George Floyd

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Driver Noah Gragson has been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR and Legacy Motor Club due to liking an insensitive meme with a photo of George Floyd’s face.

“I am disappointed in myself for my lack of attention and actions on social media,” Gragson posted Saturday. “I understand the severity of this situation. I love and appreciate everyone. I try to treat everyone equally no matter who they are. I messed up plain and simple.”

Floyd, who was Black, died in 2020 after a white police officer knelt on his neck for 9 1/2 minutes. His death sparked mass protests around the world and forced a national reckoning on racial injustice.

Josh Berry will be in the No. 42 Chevrolet in Sunday’s race at Michigan International Speedway to replace Gragson.

NASCAR said Gragson violated the member conduct of its rule book, without providing details.

“His actions do not represent the values of our team,” Legacy Motor Club said in a statement.

The 25-year-old Gragson, who is from Las Vegas, is in his first full season in the Cup series and is No. 33 in points.

In the wake of Floyd’s death, NASCAR banned the Confederate flag at events and venues after Bubba Wallace — its lone Black driver — said there was “no place” for it in the sport. Earlier that year, Cup series driver Kyle Larson used a racial slur while playing a video game. Chip Ganassi Racing fired Larson and he was suspended by NASCAR, which required him to complete a sensitivity training course for reinstatement.

NASCAR said Gragson violated the member conduct of its rule book, without providing details.

Driver plows into pedestrians on busy New York City sidewalk while fleeing police, injuring 10

NEW YORK — A man driving a stolen SUV struck a group of pedestrians on a sidewalk while fleeing from police Tuesday on a busy Manhattan street near Grand Central Terminal, injuring 10 people who all were expected to survive, authorities said.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene during the afternoon rush hour near the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 42nd Street in Midtown, also near the Chrysler Building and the Hyatt Grand Central New York hotel. The worst of the injuries was a fractured ankle, police and fire officials said at an evening news conference at the scene.

Police were alerted to a stolen vehicle by a license plate scanner at about 5:30 p.m. and tried to stop the SUV, which initially appeared to be pulling over, officials said.

The vehicle drove off, struck a bicyclist and a taxi and then went up on a sidewalk and hit the pedestrians while making a U-turn on Lexington, police said. The SUV then drove the wrong way on Lexington and struck another vehicle head-on, police said. Officers said the SUV’s speeds were low because of traffic.

The driver of the SUV, which was reported stolen out of the Bronx on Monday, was a 20-year-old man who was detained at the scene by bystanders until police arrived. Police say the man did not have a New York driver’s license.

Police did not take questions at the news conference and said the investigation was ongoing.

Driver charged in Vermont crash that killed actor Treat Williams

A Vermont man was charged in the crash that killed actor Treat Williams, Vermont State Police said Tuesday.

Ryan Koss, 35, was cited Tuesday evening on a charge of grossly negligent operation with death and released, the agency said in a statement.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 25 in Bennington, it said.

Koss, of Dorset, Vermont, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It wasn’t clear if he had counsel; the state Office of the Defender General did not immediately respond to an inquiry.

The June 12 crash in Dorset happened just before 5 p.m. when Koss started to make a left turn on Vermont Route 30 into a parking lot, state police said.

Koss, driving a 2008 Honda Element, turned in the path of Williams, who was riding a 1986 Honda VT700c motorcycle, state police said.

“Williams was unable to avoid a collision and was thrown from his motorcycle,” the agency said in a statement the night of the crash.

A medical examiner later concluded the actor died of severe trauma and blood loss, it said.

Williams guest starred in HBO’s “We Own This City,” a drama about corruption in Baltimore, played the title character in the film “The Congressman,” and burst into Hollywood as director Miloš Forman’s hippie character George Berger in “Hair.”

He was 71.

Driver who hit 6 farm workers says it was an accident and he fled in panic

The driver who struck six farm workers outside a North Carolina Walmart turned himself in to authorities Monday, saying it was an accident and that he fled in a panic, police said.

Daniel Gonzalez, 68, of Hickory, was arrested for felony hit-and-run and released on $50,000 bond, the Lincolnton Police Department said in a statement.

Family members accompanied him as he turned himself in early Monday evening, police said. Relatives told investigators he had said that the Sunday collisions were unintentional and that he fled in panic, the department said.

Six migrant workers were hit in what appears to be an intentional assault with a vehicle in Lincolnton, N.C., on July 30.

The farm workers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the Lincolnton department said Sunday. According to their employer, Jeff Crotts of Knob Creek Farm in Lawndale, the six are in the United States under an agricultural visa for seasonal farm workers.

The six had been taken by bus to the Lincolnton Walmart, 35 miles northwest of Charlotte, for shopping on Sunday, Crotts said.

Authorities said they initially believed the collisions may have been intentional, and they distributed security imagery of the offending SUV along with news that the culprit was possibly an older white man.

The FBI said it joined the investigation.

But the story changed radically Monday, with Lincolnton Interim Police Chief Brian R. Greene saying the driver may be Hispanic or Latino.

Gonzalez was initially described as a person of interest, but police later alleged in a statement that he’s the suspect they’ve been looking for. Detectives consulted with prosecutors on what charges should apply before recommending felony hit-and-run, police said.

The Lincolnton department thanked the FBI, the State Bureau of Investigation, and a few car dealerships for helping out as officers tired to track down a compact, dark-colored SUV used in the collisions.
