Binance executive detained in Nigeria amid a crypto crackdown has escaped custody

KADUNA, Nigeria (AP) — An executive of cryptocurrency exchange Binance has escaped custody in Nigeria, where a criminal investigation has been launched against the platform accused of being used for money laundering, authorities said Monday.

Nadeem Anjarwalla, the regional manager for Binance in Africa, “fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport,” the office of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser said in a statement, calling for “whatever information that can assist law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspect.”

Nigeria is Africa’s largest crypto economy in terms of trade volume with many citizens using crypto to hedge their finances against surging inflation and the declining local currency.

Anjarwalla, who holds dual British and Kenyan citizenship, had been detained in Nigeria along with another colleague since Feb. 26 when they arrived in the country following a crackdown on the crypto platform. Tigran Gambaryan, the colleague who is an American citizen, remains in captivity.

Binance stopped all trading with the Nigerian naira currency on its platform in early March after authorities accused it of being used for money laundering and terrorism financing —without providing evidence publicly.

It was not clear how Anjarwalla fled custody. The Abuja-based Premium Times newspaper, which broke the news of his escape, reported that he fled from a guest house in the capital city after guards led him to a nearby mosque for prayers.

“The personnel responsible for the custody of the suspect have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances that led to his escape from lawful detention,” Zakari Mijinyawa, spokesman for the office of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser said in a statement.

The Binance executives were being detained on court order and are due to appear in court on April 4, the statement said.

Nigeria’s tax agency, meanwhile, filed a four-count charge on tax evasion against the crypto exchange, accusing it also of “complicity in aiding customers to evade taxes through its platform.”

“The charges further detail specific instances where Binance purportedly violated tax laws, such as failing to issue invoices for VAT purposes, thus obstructing the determination and payment of taxes by subscribers,” the local Federal Inland Revenue Service said in a statement.

British-Kenyan executive Nadeem Anjarwalla no longer in custody

Cryptocurrency firm Binance has told the BBC that one of its executives who had been arrested by the authorities in Nigeria is no longer in custody, amid reports he has escaped the country.

Nadeem Anjarwalla, a British-Kenyan dual national, was arrested in February with his US colleague Tigran Gambaryan.

Their detention came as the Nigerian authorities investigated alleged wrongdoing by Binance.

The company has not commented on the accusations it has been facing.

“We were made aware that Nadeem is no longer in Nigerian custody. Our primary focus remains on the safety of our employees and we are working collaboratively with Nigerian authorities to quickly resolve this issue,” a Binance spokesperson said.

Mr Anjarwalla, the company’s Africa regional manager, and Tigran Gambaryan, in charge of financial crime compliance at the firm, were arrested on 26 February after attending meetings in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, to which they had been invited by the government, Binance said.

The authorities reportedly demanded that they name Nigerians trading on their platform.

A court granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s request to detain the two executives for 14 days, but their continued detention was not authorised by the court, a source close to the families told the BBC.

They were due to appear again in court on 4 April.

Nigerian media are reporting that Mr Anjarwalla asked the guards at a guest house where he was being held to allow him to go to the mosque last Friday but never returned.

The authorities had reportedly confiscated his British passport but the whereabouts of his Kenyan passport was unknown.

“Nadeem left Nigeria by lawful means,” the source close to the families said. Mr Gambaryan remains in custody.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian authorities have formally filed tax evasion charges against Binance at the High Court in Abuja, and named Mr Anjarwalla among the respondents.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service is accusing the cryptocurrency platform of non-payment of value added tax, company income tax, failure to file tax returns and complicity in aiding customers to evade taxes through its platform.

Last month, the Nigerian authorities clamped down on cryptocurrency firms in general over allegations they were being used for money laundering and financing terrorism.

The country’s central bank alleged that over $26bn (£20.6bn) worth of transactions had passed through Binance with untraceable sources.

It accused the platforms of fixing exchange rates and currency speculation leading to the free-fall of the naira, the local currency, and ordered the firm to pay a fine of $10bn.

Binance is understood to be one of the most popular cryptocurrency platforms in Nigeria.

Africa’s largest economy is battling an economic crisis worsened by the weakening of the naira, the soaring cost of living, and food inflation.

Lake Tahoe foot fondler who broke into 2 women’s homes as they slept is in custody, police say

A suspect has been arrested in the case of an intruder who broke into two women’s vacation homes in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and fondled their feet as they slept, authorities said Tuesday.

Mark Anthony Gonzales, 26, was taken into custody on Tuesday at his home in Atwater, California, a city about 31 miles southeast of Modesto, on two counts of burglary and two counts of battery, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Gonzales allegedly entered two women’s “resort condominiums” at a resort in Stateline, a census-designated place about 60 miles southwest of Reno, through unlocked screen doors between July 1 and July 3.

He allegedly rubbed the women’s feet while they slept in their beds, according to the sheriff’s office. The women woke up in the midst of the assaults and confronted the man before he fled the scene.

The incidents prompted the officials to urge locals to lock their doors.

Forensic techniques were used to identify Gonzales, according to the sheriff’s office. He was suspected of numerous crimes in the Atwater and Merced County area, “including the theft of women’s shoes, trespassing, and sexual self-gratification during some of these incidents.”

Investigators believed “that Gonzales’ crimes were escalating in nature,” the sheriff’s office said.

Jail records show Gonzales was booked into the John Latorraca Correctional Facility in Merced just before 8:40 a.m. local time Tuesday. He was booked on a fugitive warrant without bond as he awaited extradition to Nevada.

Eric Cachinero, community relations manager for Douglas County, said that it was not immediately clear how much prison time Gonzales could face if convicted or if he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

Cachinero said that as of late Wednesday morning, Gonzales was still not in their custody in Nevada, and added that the arrest affidavit can’t be released until he arrives in Douglas County and is arraigned.

A representative for the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office could not immediately be reached by NBC News on Wednesday.

NYPD: Driver hits 10 people while fleeing police on East Side, suspect in custody

10 injured after man driving stolen car flees police in Manhattan

10 injured after man driving stolen car flees police in Manhattan

02:36

NEW YORK — Police say the driver of a stolen car was taken into custody after hitting 10 people in Manhattan on Tuesday evening.

It happened during rush hour on Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street.

It started when officers were following the stolen vehicle and the driver tried to flee. As he did, he struck the pedestrians, including a 6-year-old and two cars along the way, police said.

NYPD briefing after 10 pedestrians struck on East Side

03:44

Police say a license plate reader tipped officers to the stolen maroon Hyundai at 45th Street and Second Avenue at around 5:30 p.m., and they followed that vehicle at a low rate of speed because of the heavy traffic.

The driver of the stolen car then hit a bicyclist on Lexington Avenue, somewhere between 42nd and 43rd streets and then hit a yellow cab closer to the intersection of 42nd before making a U-turn in the middle of the intersection at Lexington and 42nd and hitting a black livery cab driver, along with pedestrians.

“He pulled the gas and passed the bus and hit the yellow cab,” witness Carlos Cabrera said. “And then from the yellow cab, when he hit him, he went on the sidewalk and he hit the people on the street.”

Witnesses watched as good Samaritans caught up with the driver, who was later arrested. Police said the driver is 20 years old and doesn’t have a New York State driver’s license. His charges are pending.

Officials said the people injured ranged in age from 6 to 72. Eight of them were transported to Bellevue Medical Center and two refused medical attention. Some of the injuries were ankle-related and abrasions, but all are non-life threatening.

Woman accused of killing bride in DUI golf cart crash must remain in custody, S.C. judge orders

A woman accused of killing a bride when she crashed into a newlywed couple’s golf cart while allegedly driving under the influence must remain in custody as she awaits trial, a South Carolina judge ordered Tuesday.

Jamie Komoroski, 25, asked Circuit Court Judge Michael G. Nettles for bail after spending three months behind bars without trial following the April 28 crash in Folly Beach. She was denied.

Samantha Miller, 34, died in the late-night crash. Her husband, Aric Hutchinson, sustained a brain injury and broken bones, his mother, Annette Hutchinson, said on a GoFundMe page in May.

Two other people were injured, Folly Beach Department of Public Safety said at the time.

Komoroski’s blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit after the crash, according to a toxicology report released by the department.

Authorities said Komoroski was traveling at 65 in a 25 mph zone when the vehicle she was driving struck the cart, which police said was street legal for the area, according to The Associated Press.

Komoroski has been fighting the case, which includes charges of reckless homicide and DUI. On Tuesday, defense attorney Christopher Gramiccioni said his client has “zero criminal history.”

“She’s never even been disciplined at her college at Coastal Carolina or in high school,” he said in court. “I mean she has as clean of a record as you can imagine.”

Attorney Jerry Meehan said in a statement Miller’s family was pleased with the outcome and agreed with the judge’s decision that Komoroski “was a danger to the community.”

“I wouldn’t want anybody else to go through this,” the victim’s mother, Lisa Miller, said in a statement read in court.

Outside the courtroom, she said of the defendant, “Why should she just get out and go about her merry way?” according to NBC affiliate WCBD of Charleston.

Komoroski was being held at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston. Nettles, the judge, said during his rejection of bail that if trial hasn’t happened by spring 2024, he’ll allow $150,000 bond with house arrest.

“We appreciate the court’s decision to release Jamie on bond in March 2024 if the State is not ready for trial, but we nonetheless believe that she has met the legal criteria for release today,” Gramiccioni said in a statement after Tuesday’s ruling.

Suspect in custody after allegedly running over migrant workers outside North Carolina Walmart

A suspect has been arrested and charged with felony hit and run after allegedly plowing into a group of migrant workers outside a Walmart in North Carolina, police said.

Daniel Gonzalez turned himself in just before 6 p.m. local time Monday, the Lincolnton Police Department said in a statement.

The migrants were hit by a black SUV outside a Walmart in Lincolnton around 1:17 p.m. Sunday, the Lincolnton Police Department said. They were taken to a local hospital and none of their injuries appeared to be life-threatening, according to police.

Surveillance video showed the SUV slowly driving through the parking lot and then turning to face the group of workers, who were standing on the sidewalk. The SUV then accelerated over the curb and into the group before driving away.

Gonzalez’s family members, who were with him when he turned himself in, claimed he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes and he drove away because he panicked, police said in a statement.

The victims were not publicly identified, but CBS affiliate WBTV reported they worked for Toluca Blackberry, which provides workers for Knob Creek Orchard in Lawndale, North Carolina, a roughly 30-minute drive from Lincolnton.
