Manhattan DA asks judge in Trump’s hush money case to ‘clarify or confirm’ that gag order applies to family members

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office this week asked a judge presiding over the New York criminal case against Donald Trump to “clarify or confirm” that his earlier order restricting the former president’s public statements about the case and those involved applies to family members.

In a letter dated Thursday and acknowledged as received by the court on Friday, prosecutors asked that the court weigh in on whether a partial gag order issued by Judge Juan Merchan on Tuesday “protects family members of the Court, the District Attorney, and all other individuals mentioned in the Order” and asked that the court “direct that defendant immediately desist from attacks on family members.”

Trump’s attorneys responded in opposition in their own letter on Friday, arguing that the “express terms of the gag order do not apply in the manner claimed” by prosecutors.

Trump has blasted Merchan as “biased and conflicted” while also taking aim at his daughter for a social media post that a court spokesperson said was wrongly attributed to her.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Police say a license plate reader tipped officers to the whereabouts of the stolen Hyundai and they followed it at a low rate of speed because of the heavy traffic.

According to police, the Hyundai then hit a bicyclist and yellow cab before making a U-turn in the middle of an intersection and striking pedestrians and a black livery cab. Then, the motorist got out and attempted to run but good Samaritans caught up with him and officers arrested him.

Police said he’s 20 years old and doesn’t have a New York State driver’s license. Charges against him were pending.

Officials said the people injured ranged in age from 6 to 72 and none of the injuries were non-life threatening.

NEW YORK — Police say the driver of a stolen car was taken into custody after hitting 10 people in Manhattan on Tuesday evening.

It happened during rush hour on Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street.

It started when officers were following the stolen vehicle and the driver tried to flee. As he did, he struck the pedestrians, including a 6-year-old and two cars along the way, police said.

Police say a license plate reader tipped officers to the stolen maroon Hyundai at 45th Street and Second Avenue at around 5:30 p.m., and they followed that vehicle at a low rate of speed because of the heavy traffic.

The driver of the stolen car then hit a bicyclist on Lexington Avenue, somewhere between 42nd and 43rd streets and then hit a yellow cab closer to the intersection of 42nd before making a U-turn in the middle of the intersection at Lexington and 42nd and hitting a black livery cab driver, along with pedestrians.

“He pulled the gas and passed the bus and hit the yellow cab,” witness Carlos Cabrera said. “And then from the yellow cab, when he hit him, he went on the sidewalk and he hit the people on the street.”

Witnesses watched as good Samaritans caught up with the driver, who was later arrested. Police said the driver is 20 years old and doesn’t have a New York State driver’s license. His charges are pending.

Officials said the people injured ranged in age from 6 to 72. Eight of them were transported to Bellevue Medical Center and two refused medical attention. Some of the injuries were ankle-related and abrasions, but all are non-life threatening.

Donald Trump is facing a third indictment for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. That follows criminal charges in Manhattan connected to “hush money” payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, and federal charges over his handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. Trump could soon be indicted in Georgia over alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election there too. CBS News’ Nikole Killion, Graham Kates and Jeff Pegues take a closer look at where these cases stand.
