10-year-old deputy’s son accused of selling gun to 10-year-old classmate at Florida elementary school

Two 10-year-old students were arrested in connection to a gun sold at their elementary school in Florida, county officials confirmed.

A deputy’s son “agreed to exchange a handgun, (later found to belong to his deceased father), for a sum of $300” back in February, the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The Country Oaks Elementary School was placed under lockdown Wednesday morning after the Sheriff’s Office received a call about “a suspicious incident” on campus. Authorities discovered ammunition in the backpack of the boy who purchased the gun.

The gun was later found in his backyard under a shed, hidden with a 74 gram bag of marijuana, according to investigators.

The boy was charged with the purchase of a firearm by a minor, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school property and possession of marijuana over 20 grams.

The deputy’s son was charged with selling a firearm to a minor, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school property and grand theft of a firearm.

The mother of the deputy’s son, also a Hendry County deputy, was placed on administrative leave pending an administrative inquiry, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Both students have been in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice since their arrest.

Family attacked in Illinois stabbing spree praises son, dog for saving their lives

ROCKFORD, Ill. — A mother who was injured in an Illinois stabbing spree Wednesday said that if it wasn’t for her son, who was also attacked, she and her daughter might not have survived after the attacker entered their home.

Darlene Weber and her children, Jacob Vollman, 21, and Cathy Gilfillan, 23, described the assault. Christian Soto is accused of going on a rampage Wednesday afternoon, ultimately killing four people and injuring seven others, including Weber and her kids.

“I mean, this is, like, my knight in shining armor, and he’s my son. It was like God sent him to me and sent me a gift in a small package and I was blessed with that,” Weber, 46, said in an interview Thursday.

“I’m not even kidding. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I’d be standing here talking to you right now,” she said of her son. “I really don’t. It was frightening.”

Soto was arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder and home invasion.

Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley said Soto admitted to the crimes and said he had taken marijuana he believed was “laced with an unknown narcotic” before the attacks at multiple locations in Rockford and an area of Winnebago County shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

The attack

Weber said she and her two kids — all of whom have visible injuries — were home Wednesday afternoon when she took her pit bull, Brandy. out the back door and heard a man say “hey” to her before he stabbed her in the face.

As she crawled through the house screaming for Vollman to help her, she said, Brandy jumped on and bit the man, giving her enough time to escape.

“It all happened like such a blink of an eye,” Weber said. “Remembering back, it was almost like he literally tried to kill me.”

She said Vollman then approached the man as she scrambled to find her phone and call 911.

Vollman said he went to find his mom, who was screaming for help, “and I just turn my head, and he’s standing, like, right there. And he literally looks at me and says, ‘Come here,’ and starts charging at me, and then he swings on me a couple of times.” He added that he fought the man “head on.”

He said he was hit with a metal ring around the bottom of the knife but was not stabbed with the blade.

After a couple of minutes of fighting with Vollman, the attacker turned his attention to Gilfillan, who had just awakened at 1 p.m. to screams of “help, help” and “get out of my house, you shouldn’t be here,” she said.

She said she ran upstairs, where she found her brother “boxing” with the man. At first she thought it might have been one of her brother’s friends; then, she said, the man turned toward her, charged at her and “clocked me one” before she fell into the fetal position.

She said he was about to hit her again when her brother began “waling on him” with a syrup bottle.

Gilfillan said the attacker then “dipped” out the back door, at which point police arrived.

“If it wasn’t for him,” she said, referring to Vollman, “me and mom would not be here.”

‘The devil incarnate’

Vollman said the attacker “had the world’s biggest smile on his face” when he approached him in the home, and Gilfillan said his eyes looked totally black.

“He had no brown in his eyes. It was straight pupil, like he was on drugs or something,” Gilfillan said.

Weber said, “He looked like the devil incarnate.”

The three survivors said the man was covered in blood when he arrived at their home, including his hands, sweater and pants.

“It’s like a horror movie,” Weber said.

The family, who just moved to the neighborhood in October, said they no longer feel safe there. But Weber said she is “not going to let somebody like that scare me from … having a tranquil life with my family.”

Weber said she “broke down” in the aftermath of the assault, because “I felt kind of guilty that we were survivors and … you had these innocent people that were taken from their families.”

The rampage also claimed the lives of Soto’s friend Jacob Schupbach, 23; his friend’s mother, Ramona Schupbach, 63; a mailman doing his job, Jay Larson; and Jenna Newcomb, 15, who died saving her sister.

Soto told police that he went to Jacob Schupbach’s house Wednesday afternoon to smoke marijuana and that he thinks it was laced, causing him to become paranoid, Hanley, the state’s attorney, told reporters.

Soto “said he retrieved a knife from the kitchen at Jacob’s house and proceeded to stab Jacob and Ramona to death,” Hanley said.

Weber said: “I can’t even wrap my head around what happened yesterday. It’s so hard to just sit here and just talk about it or to even replay it. I just can’t get that picture of him standing there and saying ‘hey’ to me and then the reach. I can only imagine what everyone else went through.”

Illinois parole official quits after police say a freed felon attacked a woman and killed her son

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A state parole board member resigned Monday after recommending the release of a man who a day later attacked a pregnant Chicago woman with a knife and fatally stabbed her 11-year-old son while he tried to protect her, according to authorities.

The Illinois Prisoner Review Board’s handling of the case prompted Gov. J.B. Pritzker to order that procedures for dealing with situations involving domestic violence be revamped.

Pritzker announced that LeAnn Miller, 63, of Junction submitted her resignation. Miller had prepared a report recommending Crosetti Brand’s release from prison.

The 37-year-old felon had repeatedly violated orders of protection and threatened Laterria Smith of Chicago, police said. On March 13, investigators said that Brand went to Smith’s apartment armed with a knife and assaulted her. When her son, Jayden Perkins, intervened, Brand stabbed him to death, police said.

Smith, 33, remains hospitalized in critical condition but doctors expect her and her unborn child to live. Her 6-year-old son was present during the attack but was uninjured.

A message seeking comment was left at a number associated with Miller’s home and with the Prisoner Review Board. Pritzker said in a news release that she made “the correct decision in stepping down.” The Democratic governor’s spokesperson, Alex Gough, said he was unaware of Pritzker requesting her resignation.

“It is clear that evidence in this case was not given the careful consideration that victims of domestic violence deserve and I am committed to ensuring additional safeguards and training are in place to prevent tragedies like this from happening again,” Pritzker said in a statement.

Following board procedure, two other board members, Ken Tupy and Krystal Tison, concurred with Miller’s draft order, according to a copy of the order provided by the Prisoner Review Board in response to a public records request from The Associated Press. A phone message was left for Tupy. A number for Tison could not immediately be located.

Pritzker ordered the Prisoner Review Board to “engage experts and advocates to design and implement expanded training” in domestic violence cases for the 15-member board. The board and the Department of Corrections will also review procedures for sharing information on cases involving domestic violence. Pritzker said the case might also raise issues which require legislation to broaden officials’ legal authority in such instances.

Brand, who police say had a relationship with Smith 15 years ago, is charged in Cook County with first-degree murder and a half-dozen other violent felonies related to the attack. He had served half of a 16-year sentence for attacking another ex-partner in 2015 when he was paroled in October.

Brand was shipped back to prison in February after being accused of repeatedly contacting Smith, who has an order of protection against him. He turned himself in after Smith reported he was at the door to her apartment on Feb. 1, repeatedly ringing the bell and pulling on the handle.

But when Brand appeared before the Prisoner Review Board on Feb. 26, he denied going to her apartment and his lawyer provided evidence that his electronic monitoring bracelet did not indicate violations of his movement restrictions, according to a copy of the board’s order. He answered other reported parole violations by saying he sometimes worked late hours at a Red Lobster restaurant.

The board determined there wasn’t enough evidence to verify Smith’s claims, although she was not called to testify.

Spanish actors’ son arrested in grisly Thailand murder

BANGKOK — A YouTube chef who is the son of renowned Spanish actors has confessed to killing and dismembering a man before dumping his body parts around a popular tourist island, police in Thailand said.

Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, 29, appeared in court Monday after being arrested on suspicion of murdering Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, 44, a Colombian surgeon.

Details of the grisly case first emerged last week, when local media reported that the body parts had been found around the island of Koh Phangan, a hub for revelers that is renowned for its psychedelic retreats and full moon parties.

Sancho, a chef with a YouTube channel, initially reported a missing person but then confessed over the weekend, Thai police said.

He told investigators that he had a fight with Arrieta last Wednesday after Sancho asked to break up with him because he was going to get married to someone else in Indonesia, Koh Phangan police captain Sucheep Chadakarn told NBC News.

“He said that if the talk wasn’t successful, he thought he had to kill him because he had the partner waiting to get married,” Chadakarn said.

Arrieta had threatened to cause trouble so Sancho punched him, then Arrieta bit his hand, so Sancho hit his head over and over until he died, he said.

The Spanish news agency EFE reported that Sancho told them he denied having a romantic relationship with Arrieta even as he admitted the crime. “I am guilty, but I was Edwin’s hostage. He held me hostage. It was a glass cage, but it was a cage,” it quoted Sancho as saying.

EFE reported a family lawyer who visited Sancho as saying, “I think he is relaxed. He knows what he did … He wants to plan how to live” in prison.

In Thailand, murder carries a possible death penalty.

Sancho confessed Saturday to dismembering the body into 15 pieces and took the police to locations where he had dumped them, including near a pier and a hotel, Chadakarn said.

Some of the remains were dumped in the sea, while others were found in garbage pits. Soiled clothes were also found last week, he said, with four body parts washing up to the shore.

Sancho told the police he bought a kayak after the owner refused to rent it out the night of the gruesome murder, Chadakarn said.

Investigators had only recovered seven pieces of the remains so far, he said, adding DNA tests were underway to confirm they were of Arrieta.

Daniel Sancho, son of Spanish film stars, accused of killing, dismembering man in Thailand

The son of two Spanish film stars has been arrested in Thailand on suspicion of murdering and dismembering a Colombian surgeon on a tourist island, police said.

Daniel Sancho Bronchalo was taken from Koh Phagnan, where the remains of Edwin Arrieta Arteaga were found, to another island, Samui, where he is being held, Surat Thani provincial police commander Saranyu Chamnanrat said Tuesday.

Sancho, a chef with a YouTube channel, has been charged with premeditated murder, which carries a possible death penalty, and with concealment of a body to cover up the death, Saranyu said.

Details of the killing emerged last week when Thai media reported that plastic bags containing body parts of a man, were found at a landfill on Koh Phagnan, an island famous for its monthly “full moon parties.”

Police said Sancho came in to report a missing person after the body parts were found and was subsequently detained. He later confessed to killing and dismembering Arrieta and then dumping the body parts in the landfill and the sea, although he denied that it was premeditated, police said. His arrest warrant was issued by the Koh Samui Provincial Court on Saturday.

“He admitted it,” Koh Pha Ngan’s police chief Panya Niratimanon, told AFP, adding the investigation is ongoing.

“The victim and the suspect knew each other before they came to Thailand, and his dubious activities indicate that he might murder the victim.” Panya added.

Saranyu declined to elaborate when asked about the motive, but said it was likely due to a personal relationship between the suspect and the victim. Thai media have cited police as saying that Sancho, who came to Thailand for a holiday, told the authorities that the two had a romantic relationship and that he tried to break up with the victim but the victim refused.

Sancho told Spanish news agency EFE he had been a “hostage” to the victim, who was obsessed with him. BBC News reported.

Security camera video broadcast by Thai media reportedly taken a day before the body parts were found showed Sancho and Arrieta on a motorbike together.

On Sunday, Sancho led police to seven sites, where he allegedly disposed of the victim’s dismembered body in plastic bags, BBC News reported.

Regional police chief Surapong Thanomchit told public broadcaster Thai PBS that Sancho was seen buying a knife, garbage bags and cleaning solutions before Arrieta’s death.

Media reports say Sancho is the son of Rodolfo Sancho, who starred in “El Ministerio del Tiempo” (“The Ministry of Time”), and actor Silvia Bronchalo. Sancho’s uncle, Felix Sancho, told journalists in Spain that, “A little respect for the family is all we ask for, because this is so painful.”

The family also released a statement on Sunday asking for “maximum respect, both for Daniel Sancho himself and for the whole family, in these delicate moments of maximum confusion,” Reuters reported.

The Spanish Embassy in Bangkok said it was aware of a crime involving a Spanish man but declined to give further information because of data protection legislation.

Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted a statement on its website Sunday thanking the Thai police for their investigation and said it is providing assistance to the family of the victim.

Thailand is a relatively safe country where violent crimes are rare.

Koh Pha Ngan is famed for white sandy beaches and draws thousands of backpackers to its notoriously wild “full moon” parties.

In 2014, another tourist island Koh Tao was rocked by the double murder of two young British backpackers.

Two Burmese nationals are serving sentences of life imprisonment for the murders, but rights groups have accused Thai authorities of using the men as scapegoats.

AFP contributed to this report.

Angus Cloud’s mother clarifies she does not believe her son died by suicide

Angus Cloud’s mother clarified that she does not believe her son died by suicide, offering insight into his last day with a statement posted to Facebook Friday night.

In the family’s initial statement, it was noted that Angus’ father was buried last week and that Angus was open about his battle with mental health, but no cause of death was given.

“Social media posts have suggested his death was intentional. I want you to know that is not the case,” she said.

In her statement, Lisa Cloud said that her son had been making plans for the future just before his death. Angus Cloud had discussed his intentions to provide assistance to his mother and sisters in the wake of his father’s death.

She said she hugged her son goodnight, and that “he said he would see me in the morning.”

“I only know that he put his head on the desk where he was working on art project’s, fell asleep and didn’t wake up,” his mother wrote. “We may find out that he overdosed accidentally and tragically, but it’s abundantly clear that he did not intend to check out of this world.”

Cloud, 25, died at his family’s home in Oakland, California, last week. Cloud’s family said that he had been struggling with grief following the death of his father.

The family’s official statement also spoke about Cloud’s openness about mental health struggles.

“The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend,” the family statement said. “Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence.”

Best known for his breakout role as Fezco in the HBO drama “Euphoria,” Cloud’s lovable and comedic character quickly became adored by the dedicated fans of the series.

Cloud’s mother wrote in her Friday statement that his work on the show “became a lightning rod for his generation and opened up a conversation about compassion, loyalty, acceptance and love.”

Over two seasons on the show, Cloud played a young drug dealer with a kind heart. Fezco developed strong relationships with his adopted brother, Ashtray, and a budding romance with Lexi, portrayed by Maude Apatow.

His character also refused to sell drugs to a recently sober Rue, played by Zendaya, who became addicted following her father’s death.

Zendaya remembered Cloud in a touching tribute posted to Instagram following his death.

“Words are not enough to describe the infinite beauty that is Angus (Conor),” she wrote. “I’m so grateful I got the chance to know him in this life, to call him a brother, to see his warm kind eyes and bright smile, or hear his infectious cackle of a laugh (I’m smiling now just thinking of it).”

“Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson also lamented Cloud’s death.

“There was no one quite like Angus,” the director said in a statement. “He was too special, too talented and way too young to leave us so soon. He also struggled, like many of us, with addiction and depression. I hope he knew how many hearts he touched.”

Father, 14-year-old son charged after teen allegedly uses dad’s gun to kill girl in New Mexico

A father and his 14-year-old son were charged after the teen allegedly used his dad’s gun to kill a girl in New Mexico on Friday, according to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

The 14-year-old was hanging out with three other minors and listening to music at his father’s home at 104 Cabresto Road in Questa around 2:30 p.m., police said.

“At some point, a 14-year-old male took out a pistol and pointed it at a 13-year-old female,” the Department of Public Safety said in a news release. “The male pulled the trigger, fatally wounding the female. The male then dragged the female’s body outside and returned to the residence.”

Police said the pistol belonged to the teen’s father, 39-year-old William Brown.

Brown came home after the fatal shooting. When officers arrived to investigate the homicide, both Brown and his son would not come out of the home for around 30 minutes, officials said.

The teen was arrested and booked into the San Juan Juvenile Detention Center in Farmington. He was charged with an open count of murder in the first degree, two counts of tampering with evidence and two counts of assault on a police officer.

Officials didn’t clarify why the 14-year-old was charged with assault on a police officer.

Brown was arrested and charged with “negligent making a firearm accessible to a minor resulting in death” and booked into the Taos County Detention Center.

“Out of respect for the victim’s family, the New Mexico State Police will not release the name of the juvenile victim,” the Department of Public Safety said. “We also will not release the name of the juvenile suspect via press release.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and once complete, will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office.
