Good Samaritan in Illinois stabbing spree said ‘human nature’ led him to intervene

Keith Fahrney was driving home from class in Rockford, Illinois, when he saw a woman being attacked by Christian Soto, the man accused of killing four people and injuring seven others during a stabbing spree Wednesday.

Fahrney, 51, said that, without thinking, he hit his brakes and ran over to help the woman, getting attacked himself.

After a night in the hospital, Fahrney is now back home and trying to process what happened.

“It’s very scary. You never think this is going to happen to you,” he said in a phone call Friday. “My stepdaughter when she called from Florida, she said, ‘Well, luckily, you’re the kind of person that just won’t take out your phone and start recording. You were the one that went over there and scared this guy off to protect her.'”

Authorities said the rampage began shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday and involved “multiple scenes” in Rockford and an area of Winnebago County.

Soto, 22, was arrested after police said he stabbed three people to death and fatally beat a 15-year-old girl who was watching movies with her sister and friend. He faces numerous charges of murder, attempted murder and home invasion.

The victims killed were identified as Jacob Schupbach, 23; Ramona Schupbach, 63; Jay Larson, 49, a mailman; and Jenna Newcomb, 15.

Seven others, including Fahrney, were injured.

Fahrney, who is studying to be an engineer, said he was on his way home when he saw a wild scene: two women with blankets and towels running down the street screaming for help.

“I drove maybe another 1,000 feet or whatever and noticed that there was this lady sitting in the middle of her yard with somebody standing over the top of her,” he said. “She looked like she was in distress as I was starting to pass her. So, I slammed on my brakes. I got out of the vehicle.”

Fahrney, who lives in Rockford, said he approached the woman and asked if she was OK. Soto then moved away from her, he said.

When Fahrney realized that the woman was covered in blood, he went to his vehicle to grab his cellphone and came face-to-face with Soto, who had jumped in the driver’s seat of Fahrney’s car and was trying to flee.

“I opened up my door, grabbed him, threw him out,” he said. “We kind of wrestled around for a couple of seconds and then I noticed that he was trying to like tap me in the head. … And at that time, I noticed that this liquid was running down my chest and I put my hand up to my head and there was blood. I realized that he had stabbed me or did something to me.”

During the fight, police arrived and arrested Soto after a brief foot chase, according to authorities.

Fahrney said Soto had stabbed him in the neck and slashed the back of his head. He received eight staples for his head injury and three stitches underneath his chin.

He said Soto did not say anything during the attacks but “looked very estranged like something had taken over his body.”

Sheriff Gary Caruana said Thursday that the woman “could have easily been deceased” if it wasn’t for Fahrney.

“The good Samaritan stopped that situation,” Caruana said at a news conference. “He did a tremendous job in helping.”

A motive for the attacks remains unclear. Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley said Soto admitted to the attacks and said he had taken marijuana that he believed was “laced with an unknown narcotic” before the rampage.

Soto appeared in court Thursday afternoon and was denied pretrial release until his next hearing.

Fahrney said he does not consider himself a hero and thinks “human nature” is what made him jump out and help.

“I’m just a guy that was trying to help somebody that needed help,” he said.

Fahrney said he hopes other people will do the same for someone who is in danger.

“In today’s world, people need to get off their phones. They need to stop recording,” he said. “People got to step in and start helping everybody else.”

Illinois stabbing survivors describe attack and Evan Gershkovich detained for a year: Morning Rundown

An Illinois mother credits her son and dog with saving her life during a stabbing spree that left four people dead. Two former presidents — and dozens of protesters — attend Joe Biden’s fundraiser. And shadowy Russian actors were all too happy to spread Princess Kate conspiracies.

 Here’s what to know today.

Family attacked in Illinois stabbing spree describes the fight to survive

When Rockford, Illinois, resident Darlene Weber came face-to-face with an attacker who entered her house, she said, “He looked like the devil incarnate.” A day later, Weber said that if it wasn’t for her son, she might not have survived.

A 22-year-old man is accused of going on a rampage through Rockford, Illinois, on Wednesday afternoon, ultimately killing four people and injuring seven others — including Weber and her two kids.

Recalling the attack in an interview yesterday, Weber said it felt like “it all happened in such a blink of an eye.” She took her pit bull, Brandy, out the back door, she said, and heard a man say “hey” to her before he stabbed her in the face. As Weber crawled through the house screaming for her son to help her, Brandy bit the man. It gave her enough time to escape.

When Weber’s son, 21-year-old Jacob Vollman, went to find his mom, he was confronted by the attacker. “And he literally looks at me and says, ‘Come here,’ and starts charging at me,” Vollman said.

This is Morning Rundown, a weekday newsletter to start your morning. Sign up here to get it in your inbox.

After a couple of minutes fighting with Vollman, the attacker turned his attention to Weber’s daughter, 23-year-old Cathy Gilfillan — but Vollman was able to keep fighting him off. “If it wasn’t for him,” Gilfillan said, referring to Vollman, “me and mom would not be here.”

Authorities identified the suspect as Christian Soto. He was arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder and home invasion. Soto’s attorney said he admitted to the crimes and that he had taken marijuana he believed was “laced with an unknown narcotic,” causing him to become paranoid.

Among those killed are Jay Larson, a mail carrier who was on the job when he was attacked, and 15-year-old Jenna Newcomb, who died saving her sister, officials said. Here’s what else we know.

Pro-Palestinian protesters pressure Biden at NYC fundraiser

Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton joined President Joe Biden in a star-studded campaign fundraiser last night that was hosted by actor Mindy Kaling, featured photos taken by Annie Leibovitz and raised over $25 million. But anti-war protesters made their presence known at the event.

Over 100 people crowded outside Radio City Music Hall with Palestinian flags and signs with anti-war slogans. “We cannot idly sit by as our president aides and abets genocide in Gaza,” one protester said. Inside the fundraiser, protestors interrupted a moderated discussion between Biden, prompting late night host Stephen Colbert to ask Biden about the U.S. role in a peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians.

Biden responded with talk of diplomatic efforts towards a two-state solution and acknowledged that more needed to be done to shepherd relief into Gaza but added that Israel’s existence was at stake. Here’s what else happened at the fundraiser.

  • Recent polling suggests most Jewish Israelis support Israel’s offensive in Gaza. But at a Ramadan meal with Palestinian Bedouin, some shared a different view.
  • A State Department official’s resignation and increasing disapproval of Israel’s conduct in Gaza shows how U.S. ire toward its ally is growing.
  •  Israel’s Supreme Court on ordered an end to state funding for ultra-Orthodox students who do not serve in the army, a blockbuster ruling that could imperil the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Baltimore bridge workers were on break at time of collapse, family member says

Just days after the container ship Dali collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, details about the incident and what happened to the workers are still unfolding. Julio Cervantes was one of two workers rescued following the collapse — a miracle, his wife said, because “my husband doesn’t know how to swim.”

“All of the men were on a break in their cars when the boat hit. We don’t know if they were warned before the impact,” Cervantes’ wife, who did not disclose her name, said in an exclusive interview. Cervantes was taken to a nearby hospital after the rescue with a chest wound and later released.

Cervantes’ wife says her brother-in-law was one of the two victims recovered near the wreckage site earlier this week. And her nephew is one of the four victims still missing, she said.

The shadowy actors that spread Princess Kate conspiracies

Before Kate, Princess of Wales, announced she had been diagnosed with cancer, #KateGate conspiracies speculating about her whereabouts ran wild on the internet. British security experts say social media accounts linked to a prominent Russian disinformation campaign capitalized on the rumors.

Roughly 45 accounts that posted about Kate on X were identified as belonging to the disinformation campaign, known as the Doppelgänger, an analysis found. While these actors didn’t originate the rumors, they contributed to the rumors’ rampant spread.

Experts say they see #KateGate as an alarming test case for what can happen when fake news and disinformation is supercharged by artificial intelligence, particularly on social media.

‘We want him home’: Family of U.S. reporter jailed in Russia for a year tries to stay hopeful

Even as a child, Evan Gershkovich seemed destined to be a reporter. He was always curious, liked a good story, and was deeply interested in Russia, the country his parents had emigrated from.

He was there, as Russia instituted the biggest crackdown on the free press in decades — one that would ensnare him, left awaiting trial on espionage charges that many in the West decry as punishment for doing his job. NBC News spoke to his family and some of his closest friends as his detention reached a year today.

Michigan GOP lawmaker falsely labels March Madness athletes ‘illegal invaders’

A Michigan state lawmaker involved in former President Donald Trump’s election denials is being widely criticized making false claims that buses carrying college athletes to Detroit for March Madness were shuttling illegal migrant “invaders” into the city.

State House Rep. Matt Maddock made the claim Wednesday night in a social media post accompanied by photos of three buses near an Allegiant plane at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Maddock wrote that the buses “just loaded up with illegal invaders.” Four college basketball teams traveling to Detroit for the second weekend of the NCAA basketball tournament arrived by plane Wednesday evening, the Wayne County Airport Authority said in a statement.

Politics in Brief

Biden impeachment probe: Joe Biden was formally invited to testify in the impeachment inquiry led by two Republican-led House committees — during the same week one of Donald Trump’s trials is set to begin.

South Carolina politics: The same federal court that previously ruled a Charleston-area district was unlawfully drawn decided yesterday that the map must be used for this year’s congressional election. The reason for the decision: The Supreme Court delayed the case for too long.

Arizona politics: Kari Lake, a self-proclaimed “Trump in heels” who lost the Arizona gubernatorial race in 2022, is working to win over voters in her Senate bid. But several key Republicans in the state say her campaign faces an increasingly uphill battle as she struggles to shed her MAGA instincts.

Family attacked in Illinois stabbing spree praises son, dog for saving their lives

ROCKFORD, Ill. — A mother who was injured in an Illinois stabbing spree Wednesday said that if it wasn’t for her son, who was also attacked, she and her daughter might not have survived after the attacker entered their home.

Darlene Weber and her children, Jacob Vollman, 21, and Cathy Gilfillan, 23, described the assault. Christian Soto is accused of going on a rampage Wednesday afternoon, ultimately killing four people and injuring seven others, including Weber and her kids.

“I mean, this is, like, my knight in shining armor, and he’s my son. It was like God sent him to me and sent me a gift in a small package and I was blessed with that,” Weber, 46, said in an interview Thursday.

“I’m not even kidding. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I’d be standing here talking to you right now,” she said of her son. “I really don’t. It was frightening.”

Soto was arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder and home invasion.

Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley said Soto admitted to the crimes and said he had taken marijuana he believed was “laced with an unknown narcotic” before the attacks at multiple locations in Rockford and an area of Winnebago County shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

The attack

Weber said she and her two kids — all of whom have visible injuries — were home Wednesday afternoon when she took her pit bull, Brandy. out the back door and heard a man say “hey” to her before he stabbed her in the face.

As she crawled through the house screaming for Vollman to help her, she said, Brandy jumped on and bit the man, giving her enough time to escape.

“It all happened like such a blink of an eye,” Weber said. “Remembering back, it was almost like he literally tried to kill me.”

She said Vollman then approached the man as she scrambled to find her phone and call 911.

Vollman said he went to find his mom, who was screaming for help, “and I just turn my head, and he’s standing, like, right there. And he literally looks at me and says, ‘Come here,’ and starts charging at me, and then he swings on me a couple of times.” He added that he fought the man “head on.”

He said he was hit with a metal ring around the bottom of the knife but was not stabbed with the blade.

After a couple of minutes of fighting with Vollman, the attacker turned his attention to Gilfillan, who had just awakened at 1 p.m. to screams of “help, help” and “get out of my house, you shouldn’t be here,” she said.

She said she ran upstairs, where she found her brother “boxing” with the man. At first she thought it might have been one of her brother’s friends; then, she said, the man turned toward her, charged at her and “clocked me one” before she fell into the fetal position.

She said he was about to hit her again when her brother began “waling on him” with a syrup bottle.

Gilfillan said the attacker then “dipped” out the back door, at which point police arrived.

“If it wasn’t for him,” she said, referring to Vollman, “me and mom would not be here.”

‘The devil incarnate’

Vollman said the attacker “had the world’s biggest smile on his face” when he approached him in the home, and Gilfillan said his eyes looked totally black.

“He had no brown in his eyes. It was straight pupil, like he was on drugs or something,” Gilfillan said.

Weber said, “He looked like the devil incarnate.”

The three survivors said the man was covered in blood when he arrived at their home, including his hands, sweater and pants.

“It’s like a horror movie,” Weber said.

The family, who just moved to the neighborhood in October, said they no longer feel safe there. But Weber said she is “not going to let somebody like that scare me from … having a tranquil life with my family.”

Weber said she “broke down” in the aftermath of the assault, because “I felt kind of guilty that we were survivors and … you had these innocent people that were taken from their families.”

The rampage also claimed the lives of Soto’s friend Jacob Schupbach, 23; his friend’s mother, Ramona Schupbach, 63; a mailman doing his job, Jay Larson; and Jenna Newcomb, 15, who died saving her sister.

Soto told police that he went to Jacob Schupbach’s house Wednesday afternoon to smoke marijuana and that he thinks it was laced, causing him to become paranoid, Hanley, the state’s attorney, told reporters.

Soto “said he retrieved a knife from the kitchen at Jacob’s house and proceeded to stab Jacob and Ramona to death,” Hanley said.

Weber said: “I can’t even wrap my head around what happened yesterday. It’s so hard to just sit here and just talk about it or to even replay it. I just can’t get that picture of him standing there and saying ‘hey’ to me and then the reach. I can only imagine what everyone else went through.”

CHICAGO (CBS) — Four people were killed and five others were injured in an attack on Wednesday afternoon in Rockford, Illinois. Police said some of the victims were stabbed.

Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd said the first call came in around 1:15 p.m. for a medical call in the 2300 block of Holmes. Soon after, there were additional calls for police and paramedics at multiple scenes in Rockford and surrounding parts of Winnebago County.

Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana said there was a home invasion near the intersection of Florence and Eggleston. A young woman trying to get away was stabbed in the face and hands and seriously wounded. A Good Samaritan who tried to help her also was stabbed.

Redd said a total of four people were killed, one person was critically injured, and four other people were taken to hospitals, where their conditions were stabilized. Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said he was “totally shaken by this act of violence.”

Redd said police were questioning the suspect who was taken into custody, but there was no clear motive for the attack.

Teen charged in death of gay man used homophobic slurs before fatal stabbing, complaint says

The 17-year-old charged with murder as a hate crime in the fatal stabbing of O’Shae Sibley, a Black gay man, is alleged to have taunted Sibley and yelled homophobic slurs before the attack, according to the criminal complaint.

He then shut off his phone and shaved his head to evade the law before turning himself into police, the Brooklyn district attorney’s office said.

The teenager, who was identified in the complaint as Dmitriy Popov, has been charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon. He has pleaded not guilty, his attorney said Tuesday.

Popov was identified through video, Joseph Kenny, an assistant chief at the New York Police Department’s detective bureau, said at a news conference with Mayor Eric Adams over the weekend announcing the arrest. He turned himself in Friday through an arrangement with his attorney, Mark Pollard.

Sibley, 28, was a professional dancer and choreographer. He was returning from New Jersey to his home in Brooklyn with four friends on the evening of July 29 when they stopped at a gas station in the Midwood neighborhood, Kenny said. As they got gas, they began dancing, Kenny said, at which point, a male called out to the group and demanded that they stop.

The male is identified in court documents as Popov, whose associates are alleged to have also joined in on the demands for Sibley and his friends to stop dancing. Adams said the group had been dancing to Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album.

According to the complaint, Popov and his associates yelled homophobic slurs, and Kenny said they also made anti-Black statements. The complaint alleges Popov and the others said, “Stop dancing here we are Muslim, get that gay s— out of here.”

“We can see on the video a heated verbal dispute quickly turns physical,” Kenny said. “This results in Mr. Sibley being stabbed one time, causing his death.”

The encounter lasted approximately four minutes.

Kenny said Popov pierced Sibley’s chest and damaged his heart, before fleeing in a Toyota Highlander. Kenny said authorities were able to quickly identify Popov with help from other city agencies.

Popov’s attorney said in an interview Tuesday that his client, who appeared in court Monday, did not pretend to be Muslim, as court documents allege.

“I can tell you unequivocally, my client denies that,” Pollard said. “He’s not Muslim.”

Pollard said Popov is Christian and also denies having made anti-Black statements.

“He completely denies it — using any slurs,” Pollard said. “He has many Black friends, and his brother is married to a Black woman. Nothing in his background makes me think he hates Black people or the LGBTQ people, and he denies that.”

Kenny said the group’s anti-Black and anti-gay statements led to the hate crime charge. Based on the investigation, Kenny said Saturday that only Popov would be charged.

Pollard asked that the case be moved to Family Court, a move the district attorney’s office opposed. Judge Craig Walker rejected the request and ordered Popov be held without bail.

Sibley’s death has resonated with many people. Beyoncé paid tribute to him in a post on her official website that read: “Rest in Power O’Shae Sibley.”

Lee Soulja Simmons, executive director of the NYC Center for Black Pride, said over the weekend that he met Sibley in 2017 as a performer in an off-Broadway show about Black pride. He described him as an amazing dancer, who was part of the house and ballroom community.

“The saddest part about it is that we wrestle with death, we wrestle with hate crimes, we wrestle with people within our community constantly facing discrimination,” Simmons said. “Not just because you’re Black but because you represent LGBT. And the fact that he was doing nothing more but vogueing and dancing here, he did not deserve to die in that way.”

Adams shared similar sentiments.

“This is a city where you are free to express yourself,” Adams said. “And that expression should never end with any form of violence.”

Teen charged with hate crime in New York City stabbing death of O’Shae Sibley

A 17-year-old high school student has been arrested on hate crime charges in connection with last weekend’s stabbing death of a professional dancer during a dispute at a New York City gas station.

The teen, whose name was not released, was taken into custody Friday on charges of second-degree murder as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon in the slaying of 28-year-old O’Shae Sibley, officials announced in a news conference Saturday.

In the late-night hours of July 29, Sibley, who is gay, was dancing with friends to a Beyoncé song while pumping gas at a Brooklyn station when he and his friends were confronted by another group, officials said.

The altercation was captured on security video.

“Recovered video showed the victim and his friends being confronted by a group of males and being harassed,” NYPD Assistant Police Chief Joe Kenny told reporters Saturday.

“We can see on the video a heated verbal dispute quickly turns physical,” Kenny said.

Kenny disclosed that the group demanded that Sibley “stop dancing,” and “called him derogatory names, and used homophobic slurs against him. They also made anti-Black statements, all while demanding that they simply stop dancing.”

The harassment continued for about four minutes. The suspect then stabbed Sibley once in the chest with a “sharp object.” Sibley fell to the ground as the suspect fled in a Toyota Highlander.

Sibley was rushed to a local hospital, where he died of his wounds in the early morning hours of July 30.

The suspect, who attends a Brooklyn high school, was “quickly identified” by authorities, Kenny said, and his surrender was “arranged through his attorney.”

Kenny said the suspect “is being charged solely” at this time, with no immediate plans to charge the others that were in his group.

Sibley was a well-known dancer who was part of the ballroom community, which is predominantly made up of LGBTQ+ men of color.

An outpouring of support for O’Shae and his family has been widespread throughout social media across the country, with even Beyoncé herself posting about Sibley’s death on her website.

“This is a city where you are free to express yourself, and that expression should never end with any form of violence,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday.

A rally honoring Sibley was held in Brooklyn on Friday. A memorial and candlelight vigil organized by the LGBTQ community was also being held Saturday night.

A 17-year-old was arrested Friday in connection with Sibley’s death; because he’s a minor, he’s not being identified. The suspect has been charged with murder as a hate crime.

With a single stab wound, he’s accused of killing Sibley, who was dancing with friends while pumping gas at the station. Police say the teen suspect, who is Muslim, made homophobic and racist comments. Advocates within the Islamic community spoke Saturday.

“As Muslims, we are commanded to stand up for justice, even if it means standing against our own selves. We unequivocally condemn the unjust murder of O’Shae,” said Sonya Ali, executive director of the Muslim Community Center.

On Friday nights, a rally was held in Brooklyn, many honoring him through dance before marching through the streets.

Sibley was a well-known dancer who was part of the ballroom community, which is predominantly made up of LGBTQ+ men of color.

An outpouring of support for O’Shae and his family has been widespread throughout social media across the country, even Beyoncé herself posting about Sibley’s death on her website.

Saturday’s vigil will start here at the LGBTQ Community Center and continue in a march about 20 minutes away to Pier 74.

NEW YORK  A 17-year-old has been arrested in the deadly gas station stabbing in Brooklyn over the weekend that left a beloved dancer dead, police sources say.

Charges have not yet been announced, although the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Those who knew the 28-year-old victim were stunned by the senseless crime and the fact that an argument could turn deadly.

“They were dancing. They were filling up on gas, but they were voguing, doing crazy, I can promise you. I wasn’t there, but I can tell you just from what I saw that’s just how they are. He comes out here and stops the music and just starts dancing and voguing and carrying on,” Sibley’s neighbor and friend Beckenbaur Hamilton said.

Sibley was a man known for his dance moves. On Monday, he was mourned by many who believe he was the victim of a hate crime.

“He shows his colors. He’s not afraid. But he doesn’t go out there and say, ‘Oh, I’m this and that.’ But as soon as you see him you know that’s a proud gay man,” Hamilton said.

Surveillance video showed Sibley involved in a dispute with a group of people outside the Midwood gas station on Saturday night. Witnesses said they were dancing when a man walked up to them and allegedly made homophobic comments. Police said the two groups of people argued, and that’s when one man allegedly stabbed Sibley. One witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he tried to break up the argument.

“He pulled out a knife and he just stabbed him and he ran away,” the witness said.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
