Family wants answers after pregnant mother found dead in Kansas City park

The family of a 26-year-old Black, pregnant mother of four found dead near a Kansas City, Missouri, park wants to know why the police investigation into her mysterious death has stalled.

Elaysha Gilliam was found in a field near Dunbar Park shortly before midnight on Feb. 19, according to the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.

Details regarding her homicide are murky, and so far no arrests have been made.

The department hasn’t released many updates about the 5-week-old case, not even to Elaysha’s family.

“I want closure, we need answers,” said Clydetta Gilliam, 46, Elaysha’s stepmother who raised her since infancy. “The police are dragging their feet, but I need to go out here and solve the case myself. They aren’t giving us anything.”

Elaysha’s death comes as the city has struggled with homicides in recent years.

The city experienced its deadliest year on record last year, with 182 murders, according to police. The previous record of 176 homicides was set in 2020, police said. NBC affiliate KSHB reported last year that Missouri has the highest homicide rate in the country for Black women in recent years.

Officers were called to the scene on the night of Elaysha’s death and found her in a field near Dunbar Park. She appeared to be suffering from “bodily trauma,” and emergency crews pronounced her dead, police said.

She died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a death certificate.

The lack of information from police has only frustrated Clydetta, who said many of her questions regarding the death are unanswered.

“Are there any fingerprints from shell cases? What was found around her? Did she have clothes on when she was found?” Elaysha’s stepmother asked.

Detectives said they are making progress toward identifying a person of interest but have also asked for the public’s help with gathering information, and are offering a reward of up to $25,000.

“That case remains under investigation as a homicide,” the department told NBC News in an email.

As the days move forward, family members say they’re trying their best to stay together.

Brandon Gilliam, 18, last saw his older sister two weeks before she was killed, when he changed her flat tire and filled up her gas tank.

He, too, questions what caused his sister’s death.

“We’re still at a loss for words. We don’t know what to think,” Brandon said. “Death happens, but the wrong person was taken from us.”

Life hadn’t been easy for Elaysha, a pregnant mother of four whose children range in age from 2 to 9.

One of her children has sickle cell anemia and another eats through a feeding tube, family said.

“She had a lot of stress trying to take care of a lot of people,” Clydetta said.

But at 12 weeks pregnant, family members said, Elaysha couldn’t wait to bring her fifth child into the world.

“She had been shopping for baby clothes,” her father, Ed Gilliam, said.

He said Elaysha’s biological mother moved into her apartment the week she was killed, and that one of her sisters periodically stayed there as well.

He said Elaysha’s mother told him that Elaysha left home on the night of her death possibly to see her boyfriend. She left her kids at home with her mother, who was supposed to watch the children until Elaysha returned. But she never did. Elaysha’s mother couldn’t be reached for comment.

Relatives said Elaysha was in the midst of starting over. She had accepted a job at a car wash, which would serve as a temporary place of employment until she could open a hair salon.

Elaysha was also getting a new car and an apartment in a better part of town. She planned to put her kids in a different school, the family said.

Meanwhile, family members are looking back on Elaysha with fond memories.

Ed said his daughter brought joy and looked out for everyone, even at her own expense. She could be dramatic, but in a humorous way, family said. Her smile was part of her charm. And she had a knack for fashion.

“She could take a $4 outfit and make it seem like it costs $2,000,” Clydetta said. “You could see her smile all the way down the street.”

Those are just some of the traits her family will miss.

“I want my baby to get justice,” her father said. Other family members said they have to keep fighting.

“I’m not gonna let them sweep this under the rug. I want every single person charged,” Clydetta said, adding that she’s considered spending $2,000 on a billboard advertisement to drum up tips and interest in the case.

“People are starting to forget about her,” she said.

Family of Mississippi teen who died after being run over by police search for answers and accountability

The heartbroken mother of a Mississippi teen who died after he was run over by a police cruiser last week is mourning the milestones she’ll never get to see her only son achieve.

“I never [will] have the chance, an opportunity, to see my son grow up and become the young man I always knew he was going to be,” Kaychia Calvert said Friday about her 17-year-old son Kadarius Smith.

Smith died after being run over by a Leland police cruiser early March 21, according to attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Calvert, and the city attorney representing police.

The teen’s death has been agonizing, Calvert said.

“He’s supposed to graduate next year. I’m not going to get the chance to see that. He was going to move to Georgia to start his life. I’ll never see that. … If he would have had kids, I will never get the chance to see that. I will never see anything — nothing.”

Crump said that Smith died after a patrol vehicle began chasing the teen as he was running home after police were called to a house he had been at. Smith was hit from behind and had “cruiser tire marks on his back,” Crump said.

Calvert, who did not witness the incident, said a nurse told her 24-year-old daughter about the tire marks.

Crump said the teen died at a hospital.

Calvert said her son and a cousin were at a nearby home about 2 a.m. the day he died. Someone at the home called police after asking Smith to leave amid a dispute, Calvert said.

Smith was on the porch when police arrived, Crump said.

“When the police pulled up to the house … Kadarius took off running,” Crump said. “He was running home, from what we understand.”

Crump said Friday that he’s working to determine if there is video of the incident. The attorney for Leland, a city of about 4,000 residents about 115 miles northwest of Jackson, Miss., could not say if there was any video and did not know if Leland police have dashcams or bodycams.

Crump called the actions of the officer who ran over Smith, who was unarmed, “unconscionable” and said that he and Calvert hope the officer is terminated.

The officer has not been publicly identified.

Crump also accused authorities of trying to sweep the teen’s death “under the rug.”

“As if he was inferior, as if his life didn’t matter,” Crump said. “His life mattered, and we’re going to get to the bottom of this.”

Josh Bogen, who is the city attorney for Leland, on Friday said the officer has been placed on paid leave.

The city’s police department has turned over the investigation to the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Bogen said. A spokesperson with the state’s Department of Public Safety, which oversees the Highway Patrol and the Bureau of Investigation, said Friday that the highway safety patrol’s accident reconstruction team is assisting with the accident portion of the investigation. The Bureau of Investigation “is not involved in this case,” the agency spokesperson said.

Bogen disputed Crump’s account of how the events unfolded and said that the teen was hit after a call was made to police about an “assault taking place in a home” where the teen had been.

“There was a patrol vehicle that ran over the young man. As to whether he ran over his back, or what happened, that would depend on the investigation,” Bogen said calling the situation an “accident.”

“The idea that the police officer purposely ran over the alleged victim is a complete absurdity,” he said.

Officials with the police department and the department of public safety did not provide any documents or reports about the incident this week.

The county coroner’s office, which determines the cause and manner of death, did not answer respond to multiple calls. Smith, a junior in high school, had plans to move to Georgia with his sister and get into real estate after high school graduation, Calvert said.

She said the death of her “smart,” “outspoken” and “independent” son has been unfathomable.

“I wouldn’t even wish that pain on no one,” Calvert said. “It’s a pain when you lose your mom, or dad or a sister or a brother. But when you lose a child, your only son … ” Calvert said, unable to finish through her tears.

The best desktop computers for 2024

Best all-in-one Windows desktop PC: Lenovo Yoga AIO 9i Gen 9

Yoga AIO 9i All-In-One Desktop PC

Lenovo

As an all-in-one Windows PC, the Lenovo Yoga AIO 9i Gen 9 comes pre-configured with everything the average user needs. The computer rocks a sleek and modern design, with a monitor that tilts up to 20 degrees to provide the perfect viewing angle.

The computer’s 31.5-inch monitor showcases 4K resolution content. Integrated into the monitor are four Harmon Kardon speakers that support Dolby Atmos. Whether you’re working from home, or just need a computer your kids can use, the Yoga AIO 9i Gen 9 offers versatility at an affordable price. And because it comes pre-configured, it’s ideal for people who are not too tech-savvy, but still need a decent level of computing power.

We’re fans of this computer’s overall aesthetic, and we’re impressed by the vividness of the 4K display and the solid performance of the CPU. One cool feature: The base of the monitor serves as a wireless charging pad for a smartphone or other small device. Unfortunately, there’s no separate GPU, but this computer can definitely handle casual PC gaming. And while it has a webcam built-in, its 5MP resolution is not great, so you’ll probably want to connect a higher-end camera if you plan to use the computer to for video calls.

Do you need an all-in-one desktop computer?

For someone who is tech savvy, configuring a desktop computer and accessories is a no-brainer. For someone with less tech experience, a pre-configured all-on-one desktop computer is more stress-free.

The biggest benefit of an all-in one computer: Within the monitor are all of the computer’s main components, including the CPU, GPU, RAM and internal storage. The computer also comes with a mouse and keyboard — all in the same box. All of Apple’s iMac desktop computers are considered all-in-one computers, but many Windows PC desktop computer makers (including Acer, Dell, Lenovo and HP), also offer this type of computer setup.

Everything you need comes in the same box and is pre-configured. Plus, the computer’s operating system (and typically a selection of other software) comes preinstalled. With an all-in-one computer, you’re letting the maker pre-select the best combination of components on your behalf. These computers also take up less desk space and tend to be more asethetically appealing. All-in-one computers are also easier to transport.

Some of the drawbacks of purchasing an all-in-one computer are that you have fewer customization options. Plus, some types of upgrades are simply not doable. You typically can’t upgrade the CPU, GPU or monitor without purchasing a new computer. You can, however, typically upgrade just the RAM and computer’s internal storage (SSD or HDD) after purchase, plus choose an alternate wired or wireless keyboard and mouse.

How often should I replace a desktop computer?

A typical user will get between three to five years out of a new desktop computer before needing upgrades to core components. With the Windows and MacOS operating systems, all major software is usually updated continually, but there will come a time when the tech just won’t hold up. It’s at this point you’ll need to upgrade the computer or replace it.

There’s also the potential that components within the computer, such as the internal SSD of HHD storage device, could fail over time. Some of those can be repaired or replaced. But if internal storage is filled to capacity and you’re noticing a sharp decline in the computer’s performance, these could be indications that it’s time to upgrade. Or if you try to install new software, but get an error message saying your machine does not meet minimum requirements, this is another clear indication that your computer has become outdated and should be replaced.

César Chávez’s family demands RFK Jr. stop using images of the iconic labor leader in his campaign

LOS ANGELES — The family of César Chávez wants independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to stop referencing the late labor and civil rights leader on the campaign trail.

“We respectfully call upon you and your campaign to cease using images of our father to associate yourself with him and suggest your campaign’s goals are compatible,” said the letter signed by Chávez’s eldest son, Fernando Chávez.

“It is our sincere conviction that this association is untrue and deceptive,” he added.

The letter said that the family would “pursue all legal action available” if Kennedy failed to halt his campaign’s use of the United Farm Workers co-founder’s name and imagery.

The Kennedy campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Friday, ahead of César Chávez Day, the family formally endorsed President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign. One of César Chávez’s granddaughters, Julie Rodriguez Chavez, serves as Biden’s 2024 campaign manager.

Dolores Huerta, Chavez’s partner in founding the UFW, has also remained a Biden ally.

In 1968, Kennedy’s father, former Attorney General Robert Kennedy Sr., flew to California to join Chavez after he had engaged in a water-only fast for 25 days. Kennedy Sr., at the time running for the Democratic presidential nomination, lent considerable political backing to the farm labor movement’s nonviolent efforts, which included a multi-year strike of the California grape industry. His relationship with Chavez was a key marker for the Democratic Party’s embrace of the farmworkers’ labor rights movement. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968.

Kennedy Jr. is holding an event this weekend in Los Angeles that his campaign said will “celebrate the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez, a good friend of RFK and RFK, Jr.” The invitation for the event includes a photo of Kennedy Sr. and Chavez.

In July 2023, at a conference for The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, Kennedy commented on his family’s relationship with Chavez.

“My father’s close, and probably most important political alliance, which was César Chávez, who helped him win the California Primary during the last day of his life and remained a very, very close friend of mine for most of my adult life,” Kennedy said.

Manhattan DA asks judge in Trump’s hush money case to ‘clarify or confirm’ that gag order applies to family members

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office this week asked a judge presiding over the New York criminal case against Donald Trump to “clarify or confirm” that his earlier order restricting the former president’s public statements about the case and those involved applies to family members.

In a letter dated Thursday and acknowledged as received by the court on Friday, prosecutors asked that the court weigh in on whether a partial gag order issued by Judge Juan Merchan on Tuesday “protects family members of the Court, the District Attorney, and all other individuals mentioned in the Order” and asked that the court “direct that defendant immediately desist from attacks on family members.”

Trump’s attorneys responded in opposition in their own letter on Friday, arguing that the “express terms of the gag order do not apply in the manner claimed” by prosecutors.

Trump has blasted Merchan as “biased and conflicted” while also taking aim at his daughter for a social media post that a court spokesperson said was wrongly attributed to her.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Cesar Chavez’s family to endorse Biden after RFK Jr. claims civil rights leader would’ve voted for him

President Biden is set to be endorsed Friday by members of Cesar Chavez‘s family — a mostly symbolic gesture, but one meant to send a signal to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who’s trying to invoke his own family’s ties to the late union organizer and civil rights leader.

Fernando and Paul Chavez, the sons of the late co-founder of the United Farm Workers, are endorsing the president on Friday, the Biden campaign told CBS News. The family already has close ties to the campaign as Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the granddaughter of Chavez, serves as the president’s campaign manager.

“The bonds of affection and respect for a president who by his character and actions consistently reflects the genuine legacy of my father, Cesar Chavez,” Paul Chavez said in a statement.

“Today, my grandfather’s bust sits in the Oval Office — a reminder that President Biden understands the power of organizing and working people and recognizes the impact of my grandfather’s legacy to continue to mobilize our communities into action,” Julie Chavez Rodriguez told CBS News. “In an election that will determine the fate of organized labor, our Latino community, and our democracy, I could not be more humbled to accept the support of my family as one of many that will power us to victory in November ¡Si se puede!.”

An historic 36.2 million Latino voters are eligible to vote in this year’s election, an increase of 6 million voters since 2020, according to Pew Research. Both Mr. Biden and former President Donald Trump have been courting the Hispanic vote in key battleground states like Nevada and Arizona. Recent polls show this crucial demographic may be more up for grabs than in recent presidential cycles. While Mr. Biden still garners majority support from Latino voters, his backing from this critical demographic has waned. According to a CBS News poll from late February, Mr. Biden’s support among Hispanic voters has dropped by 12 points since 2020, from 65% to 53%.

Enter RFK Jr., who in his independent bid for the White House has been utilizing his uncle John F. Kennedy’s famous “Viva Kennedy” mantel in recent weeks to appeal to Latinos. On Saturday, borrowing heavily from the 1960s slogan, Kennedy will campaign in Los Angeles at a “Viva Kennedy 2024” event designed to launch his campaign’s outreach to Hispanic voters and to connect his insurgent White House bid to his father’s historic ties to the farmworker movement that helped birth the modern-day Latino civil rights movement.

The friendship between the elder Kennedy and United Farm Workers’ iconic leader Cesar Chavez helped galvanize Latino support for Robert F. Kennedy in the 1968 Democratic presidential primary before he was assassinated after winning the California primary.

This is the second time in two weeks that Mr. Biden’s reelection campaign has tried to blunt Kennedy’s campaign. On St. Patrick’s Day, the president gave members of the extended Kennedy family — including some of the candidate’s siblings and cousins — a private tour of the Oval Office and West Wing before hosting them with hundreds of others at a holiday reception. Members of the Kennedy family posted photos with the president in a signal that they stand with Mr. Biden and the Democratic Party’s nominee, despite their relative’s campaign.

The president’s ties to the Kennedy and Chavez families and his appreciation for their patriarchs are not only deeply personal, but also marked in the White House, as busts of both Robert F. Kennedy and Cesar Chavez are prominently displayed in the Oval Office.

Jailed U.S. reporter’s family speak after a year in Russian prison

Even as a child, Evan Gershkovich seemed destined to be a reporter. He was always curious, liked a good story, and was deeply interested in Russia, the country his parents had emigrated from.

He was there, as Russia instituted the biggest crackdown on the free press in decades — one that would ensnare him, left awaiting trial on espionage charges that many in the West decry as punishment for doing his job. NBC News spoke to his family and some of his closest friends as his detention reached a year on Friday.

Gershkovich, 32, was arrested last March while reporting for The Wall Street Journal in the city of Yekaterinburg, in the Ural Mountains. The Kremlin said he was caught “red-handed” receiving “secret information,” but to this day, Russia has not provided evidence to support the accusation. Gershkovich and the Journal deny all charges against him.

He is being kept in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo prison, known for its harsh conditions. His multiple appeals have been rejected in court, and his latest appearance this week saw his pre-trial detention extended again, until at least June 30. The Kremlin said Thursday it does not have information about when his trial could begin.

Gershkovich often smiles and appears in good spirits during his court appearances, but a year in custody, without much in the way of a promising resolution, is weighing heavily on his family and friends.

“It has been hard,” his father, Mikhail, told NBC News. “He spent all four seasons there, he spent his birthday and all the holidays. We want him home as soon as possible.”

Gershkovich’s parents left the Soviet Union for the U.S. during the Cold War. He and his sister, Danielle, grew up speaking Russian at home, and the family calls him “Vanya,” the diminutive for his Russian name, Ivan.

Gershkovich’s mother, Ella Milman, said his curiosity and interest in Russia drove his decision to move there in 2017 to work as a journalist, an opportunity the family was excited about.

Everything changed when Russia invaded Ukraine, and Gershkovich, like many other foreign journalists wary of new laws criminalizing criticism of the Russian army, relocated abroad, though he regularly went back to Russia to report.

Last March, Milman said she got a call from Evan, saying he needed to finish a story and would go back to London, where he was based, the following week. The next call she received about Evan was from a Journal editor, informing her that Evan had not checked in from his assignment.

Then, the news came out: a foreign reporter was arrested in Russia. “For me, it was a total shock,” Milman said.

“My heart dropped into my stomach,” Evan’s older sister, Danielle, said of the moment she learned of his arrest. She said she is very close to her brother, who has always been the responsible one growing up, but can often be a “goofball.”

They now write each other letters, she said, and he often tells her he is worried about how the family is coping, but also makes her laugh. “He is so strong,” she added. “He has not lost his spirit.”

The Biden administration considers Gershkovich “wrongfully detained” and has been actively trying to get him out. Moscow signaled early on that it may be willing to discuss a potential swap once there is a verdict in place. But in December, the State Department said Russia rejected “a new and significant proposal” to secure his release.

His arrest unnerved international news organizations still operating in Russia. Since his arrest, another American-Russian journalist, Alsu Kurmasheva, has also been detained, along with several other U.S. nationals, prompting accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been building a reserve of Americans to swap for Russian nationals jailed abroad.

He hinted in an interview last month that Gershkovich could be swapped for a Russian hitman jailed in Germany, and a deal that sources told NBC News was in the works to free opposition leader Alexei Navalny before his death in prison last month, would have also involved Gershkovich.

But for now, Gershkovich remains behind bars, and his family and friends await any news.

Pjotr Sauer, a friend of Gershkovich and a Russia reporter for The Guardian, said he writes to Evan every week, and nearly every letter is an update on Arsenal — the English team they both support fervently, which is currently enjoying its best period since Evan was a soccer-mad teen in New Jersey. He does a lot of reading and writing in jail, Sauer told NBC News, but is confined to a tiny cell, with just one hour a day to walk around. Still, his sense of humor and optimism come through in his letters, he said.

“It’s giving me a lot of strength to see that he is doing okay, given the conditions he is in,” he added. “He’s not broken, not mentally, not physically.”

What set Gershkovich apart as a foreign journalist was his deep understanding of Russia and his desire to figure out the ins and outs of what’s happening in the country, said Masha Barzunova, a friend and independent Russian journalist. Vanya, as she calls him, knew the risks, but thought that it was important to continue reporting there.

Journalists and friends celebrated that dedication to his work this week with a 24-hour read-a-thon live streamed from the Wall Street Journal that brought home how deeply reported his stories were, particularly his coverage of the conflicting emotions of Russian draftees fighting in Ukraine, and the views of many different voices of Russians about the war on the home front.

His arrest, which Borzunova said she considers a hostage taking, became one of many watershed moments indicative of changes inside Russia in the last two years. “He is holding up well but it can’t continue this long,” she said.

Since his arrest, Gershkovich’s parents have gone to see him in Russia twice — once in jail and once in court through a glass box, with guards monitoring the visit both times. Otherwise, they communicate with Evan in letters and through his Russian lawyers. They know his friends deliver fresh fruit and vegetables to him in prison, and he keeps in good physical health.

They are grateful for the Biden administration’s support, but say it’s been too long and they are worried about his mental health after a year in custody.

“Evan is not here,” Milman said. “We knew that it was going to be a marathon, but still had hopes that it will be sooner.”

For now, the family is choosing to remain optimistic and put their faith in the U.S. government, she said, because “pessimism will kill all hope.”

Asked what she would say to Putin if she had a chance, Evan’s sister, Danielle, said she would try to relay the “human cost” of his brother’s plight. “We miss him so fiercely,” she said. “We don’t want him to have one more day of his freedom taken from him. And we want him home.”

Family attacked in Illinois stabbing spree praises son, dog for saving their lives

ROCKFORD, Ill. — A mother who was injured in an Illinois stabbing spree Wednesday said that if it wasn’t for her son, who was also attacked, she and her daughter might not have survived after the attacker entered their home.

Darlene Weber and her children, Jacob Vollman, 21, and Cathy Gilfillan, 23, described the assault. Christian Soto is accused of going on a rampage Wednesday afternoon, ultimately killing four people and injuring seven others, including Weber and her kids.

“I mean, this is, like, my knight in shining armor, and he’s my son. It was like God sent him to me and sent me a gift in a small package and I was blessed with that,” Weber, 46, said in an interview Thursday.

“I’m not even kidding. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I’d be standing here talking to you right now,” she said of her son. “I really don’t. It was frightening.”

Soto was arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder and home invasion.

Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley said Soto admitted to the crimes and said he had taken marijuana he believed was “laced with an unknown narcotic” before the attacks at multiple locations in Rockford and an area of Winnebago County shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

The attack

Weber said she and her two kids — all of whom have visible injuries — were home Wednesday afternoon when she took her pit bull, Brandy. out the back door and heard a man say “hey” to her before he stabbed her in the face.

As she crawled through the house screaming for Vollman to help her, she said, Brandy jumped on and bit the man, giving her enough time to escape.

“It all happened like such a blink of an eye,” Weber said. “Remembering back, it was almost like he literally tried to kill me.”

She said Vollman then approached the man as she scrambled to find her phone and call 911.

Vollman said he went to find his mom, who was screaming for help, “and I just turn my head, and he’s standing, like, right there. And he literally looks at me and says, ‘Come here,’ and starts charging at me, and then he swings on me a couple of times.” He added that he fought the man “head on.”

He said he was hit with a metal ring around the bottom of the knife but was not stabbed with the blade.

After a couple of minutes of fighting with Vollman, the attacker turned his attention to Gilfillan, who had just awakened at 1 p.m. to screams of “help, help” and “get out of my house, you shouldn’t be here,” she said.

She said she ran upstairs, where she found her brother “boxing” with the man. At first she thought it might have been one of her brother’s friends; then, she said, the man turned toward her, charged at her and “clocked me one” before she fell into the fetal position.

She said he was about to hit her again when her brother began “waling on him” with a syrup bottle.

Gilfillan said the attacker then “dipped” out the back door, at which point police arrived.

“If it wasn’t for him,” she said, referring to Vollman, “me and mom would not be here.”

‘The devil incarnate’

Vollman said the attacker “had the world’s biggest smile on his face” when he approached him in the home, and Gilfillan said his eyes looked totally black.

“He had no brown in his eyes. It was straight pupil, like he was on drugs or something,” Gilfillan said.

Weber said, “He looked like the devil incarnate.”

The three survivors said the man was covered in blood when he arrived at their home, including his hands, sweater and pants.

“It’s like a horror movie,” Weber said.

The family, who just moved to the neighborhood in October, said they no longer feel safe there. But Weber said she is “not going to let somebody like that scare me from … having a tranquil life with my family.”

Weber said she “broke down” in the aftermath of the assault, because “I felt kind of guilty that we were survivors and … you had these innocent people that were taken from their families.”

The rampage also claimed the lives of Soto’s friend Jacob Schupbach, 23; his friend’s mother, Ramona Schupbach, 63; a mailman doing his job, Jay Larson; and Jenna Newcomb, 15, who died saving her sister.

Soto told police that he went to Jacob Schupbach’s house Wednesday afternoon to smoke marijuana and that he thinks it was laced, causing him to become paranoid, Hanley, the state’s attorney, told reporters.

Soto “said he retrieved a knife from the kitchen at Jacob’s house and proceeded to stab Jacob and Ramona to death,” Hanley said.

Weber said: “I can’t even wrap my head around what happened yesterday. It’s so hard to just sit here and just talk about it or to even replay it. I just can’t get that picture of him standing there and saying ‘hey’ to me and then the reach. I can only imagine what everyone else went through.”
